Abstract
Challenges in the implementation of character education often arise, such as teachers' lack of understanding of the concept of character that must be taught, less varied learning methods, and non-standardized assessment systems, these are serious problems that hinder character education. This study aims to determine the problems of students and teachers' efforts to improve polite behavior through Islamic Religious Education subjects. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The data sources in this study were informants consisting of 1 Islamic Religious Education teacher, 1 BK teacher, 1 Student Representative, 4 students, and 2 parents. Data collection techniques through observation, interviews and documentation. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The source validity technique used data triangulation and technique triangulation. The results of the study showed that there were still many students at SMAN 1 Koto Besar who did not apply polite behavior, especially in the learning process, discipline, and the way they spoke inappropriately. To overcome this, the efforts made were religious instillation, learning activities, giving punishments or sanctions, and individual and group guidance.
